Course Overview

Incident debriefing is an important part of supporting people who work in professions where the risk of incident or challenging situations may be higher, such as children’s services, education or emergency services.

A structured incident debriefing is a discussion which is facilitated by a trained debriefing facilitator to establish the outcome and impact of incidents and to set actions and support ideas.

This training course defines the meaning of the term ‘incident’, defines 'post incident support' and 'post incident learning', evaluates links between incident debriefing, mental health and mental ill health and describes the purpose of facilitating incident debriefing sessions.

This training course describes reasons why incident debriefing is important from a moral, organisation and legal perspective and confirms the meaning of a ‘whole organisational approach’ towards debriefing.

This training course describe factors which may indicate that a person is finding the challenge of an incident situation difficult from a physical, psychological and behavioural perspective and explains the impact which incidents can have on people.

This training course describe core skills required to be an effective incident debriefing facilitator, the meaning and importance of active listening, questioning techniques which can be used as part of a debriefing session and ways to approach and support difficult conversations.

This training course describes the importance of confirming record keeping and data protection, the importance of confirming confidentiality requirements and clarity of when confidentiality may need to be broken. This training course also explains preparation requirements for facilitating a structured debriefing including environmental considerations and resources.

This training course explains the structure of a debriefing session, providing templates for optional use following training and considers the use of SMART objectives as a way of setting actions for support. This is an accredited course.
